Sliced choices

I like to eat my apples sliced. Not many people have the patience for that, most just bite in and eat it however they like. But there's something about the pace of a slice, and biting into that crispy sliver. And most of all, I love to exercise my knife skills in this arena.

I just finished reading Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, where the moral has become: the details matter. As Isaacson traces through Apple and Pixar's history, it has been the decisions about the details of design that have accumulated to produce the legendary products that Apple is known for. The un-openable iPhones, the crisp clean Macbooks are the result of hardware and design working closely together, essentially Jobs and Ives unwavering loyalty to design, never subordinating it. Never compromise. In theory that's a nice philosophy, but in reality.. difficult.

Isaacson is a wonderful storyteller, unflinching in his portrayal of Jobs as both micro-managing maniac as well as an emotional, sensitive being. I was impressed. Jobs fluctuates between the two quite different personalities in Isaacson's recount. The book is more story than biography; at its end, it still asks me to question what Jobs was truly like. And to think, this was a man who thoroughly transformed my experience of technology, continually inventing and introducing products that have now become everyday, popular items.
Meanwhile, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Apples are so crisp and crunchy, I could eat them all the time. Having an apple always makes me feel good inside. So unlike when I indulge in ice cream, where my body feels sluggish in regret afterwards.
